Welcome to the opening of Holistic Wellness for Life North of 50 ! As we all know, Holistic Wellness can mean different things to different people. However, the basic foundation and our approach to Holistic Wellness means the wellness or health of your overall body, mind and spirit. Holistic wellness and holistic healing takes the problems and diseases of the body, the mind and the spirit and attemps to affect a solution that benefits the overall person, not just one part of that person. Here at Holistic Wellness for Life North of 50, we will offer information, resources and guidance to assist the individual over 50 to improve their general wellness and the life that surrounds them, whatever that may encompass. We hope to help maximize our members quality of life, through a holistic approach to total wellness.

In order to accomplish this, we first need to understand today’s medical environment, particularly western medicine, and how it has sub-divided health problems into smaller and refined categories. This somewhat myopic view means traditonal medicine ends up looking only at microscopic components of your body or mind, while disregarding any effects that component may be having on the rest of your body or mind. And the effects on your spirit are almost never considered and certainly not acknowledged. To understand the total impact of the body, mind and spirit, let’s look at depression as an example. Depression is normally identified as a problem of the mind with roots in the chemical composition of the brain. It’s typically treated with mood enhancing drugs and some psychotheraphy. However, depression also crushes your spirit, making your life a veritable hell. Therefore, depression can also effect your physical health and wellness. Studies are finally demonstrating the overall impact of depression and how it is more likely to contribute to the development of diabetes, cardiac, circulatory problems and other issues in the depression state patient.

There are many examples that expand on the philosophy of Holistic Wellness. But with the right outlook and mind set we can overcome many obstacles and create to different future than the seniors of the past. Just as the theory of senior living used to mean that when a person approached or reached retirement they would sit in a rocking chair or be relegated to a senior home somewhere with relatives making an occasionally visit, if they were lucky! We are no longer seniors, if we don’t want to be. We are the mid-life boomers with options and adventures to still fullfill. Life is so much more than sitting on your butt doing nothing. There’s friends, family, hobbies, clubs, groups and travel.  Even second careers and volunteer work are possible, if you decide it’s the right thing for you. Life is up to you. Your quality of life and activities available are defined by what you are willing to make them. Dream it, research it, do it! Life North of 50 is an open palette, create the canvas you desire, experiment with the colors of life. Enjoy it!

Until our next post , we at Holistic Wellness for Life North of 50 wish you a happy and engaged life.

Be well.
